Quick post about the best thing since Mario Brothers and their turtle ass-kicking, mushroom eating, flagpole climbing, princess saving, video game character selves...  I imagine this is what they would eat after a long day of coin catching, fire dodging, and "1 uping"...... damn stoners.

The only that might make this more nintendo like, would be sliced mushrooms and some hot sauce.

Attempt 1 at cooking something I remember seeing somewhere.
French Toast w/ cornflakes.

Use THICK toast, dip in egg, roll in cornflakes, grill.  For better flavor add cinnamon and vanilla to egg before dipping.  Try with Vanilla Butter syrup.

Next time, I may do grilled bananas on top.

Psst, you like pasta? PDF Print E-mail

I write about food when I get the opportunity. I love food. It shows. I had to buy a belt the other day, mine was old. I had to upgrade to a 40 and I still think it may be a little small. I have certainly put on the pounds over the years. Quitting smoking was easily replaced by hamburgers, pizza, and beer.

Tonight, while watching Biggest Loser, I waded through a wonderful mixture of Perline Pasta with fresh vegetable marinara, a dollop of homemade pesto, and some parmesan cheese. Okay, I had two pieces of focaccia bread with it.

Dinner 10/06/09

I have taken many pictures of the food I eat, and I have raved about my Wife’s cooking and our friends Stacey’s cooking. Tonight was no different. Unless you count the large man on my television talking about how he isn’t unhappy, he just likes food. Ahem. That is like saying, “I don’t like cocaine, I just like the smell.” …. What?

Back to food…

July is Hot Dog Month PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kelly McNiece

July is Hot Dog Month according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.  I did not know there was such a thing, but I am not really surprised by it.  Are you?

http://www.womansday.com/Articles/Food/10-Off-the-Wall-Hot-Dogs.html This came via my DIGG rss feed.  I had to stop and take a look.  While there are some gems in this list, I once again feel the need to add my two cents and perhaps enlighten you as to the history of the dog as best I can.

An Evil Smell : 1938 (Shorpy)

Hot dogs were mentioned in Homer's Odyssey according to whatscookinginamerica.net.  The passage:
"As when a man besides a great fire has filled a sausage with fat and blood and turns it this way and that and is very eager to get it quickly roasted. . ."
mmm yummy passage right?

Then again the Term Hot Dog was apparently a slur according to the about.com website..
The popularity of the term hot dog is generally attributed to sports cartoonist T. A. "Tad" Dorgan, who caricatured German figures as dachshund dogs just after the turn of the 19th century. His talking sausage cartoons generally denigrated the cheap wieners sold at Coney Island, crassly suggesting they contained dogmeat. It was such bad publicity that in 1913, the Chamber of Commerce actually banned use of the term "hog dog" from signs on Coney Island. The term actually first appeared in print in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1900.

The Hot Dog Council wants you to eat dogs this summer.  A lot of them.  So visit www.hot-dog.org and have a listen to Hot Dog City by Buster's Dream.  I asked the Queen of Wein Janet Riley about what makes a good hot dog.  She should know, she is the President of the NHDSC (National Hot Dog and Sausage Council for all of you that are wondering).  I did not give her much time to reply, so if she does, I will  add it here.

FoodandWine.com has Illustrious Moments in Hot Dog History which covers interesting moments and even includes some recipes with pictures that make me uncomfortable ....  although the recipe does sound good.

Before you go, here is a small guide, via wiki, to the most portable food available.

The Chicago-Style Dog - boiled all beef dogs on poppy seed buns. This is the base followed by mustard, onion, sweet pickle relish (usually a dyed neon green variety called "Nuclear Relish"), a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt; sometimes, but not always, cucumber slices. The complete assembly is sometimes called "dragged through the garden" because of the unique combination of vegetable based condiments. Ketchup is not used on a Chicago-style hot dog.

The Coney Island - 2 variations, depending on your location.  In the midwest, it is a chili covered dog with onions and mustard.  In New York, it a white hot dog, spicier, served plain or with mustard.

The Dodger Dog - Yea, you get these at the game.

The Bratwurst - it's a sausage.  More can be found on the bratwurst pages.

Bratwurst

The Corn Dog - the hot dog so good you have to hide it behind a corn shell.  The best are fresh dipped and fried to a golden brown.

3 donut recipes you should try at home. PDF Print E-mail

I love donuts.  Always have.  I can recall eating the creme filled from Winchell's when I was kid and thinking that combination of texture and flavor were enough to make me disobey my parents on a regular basis.  Okay, maybe it wasn't the donuts,  but they were good.  In fact, one of those, and a rainbow sprinkled were enough to put me over the top.  It was like Popeye and spinach.  I could kick serious arse.  Without a doubt, donuts are a little piece of Sunday morning goodness for me.  My daughter and I made the donuts from instructables.  I was hurting for the rest of the day.  Remember, moderation.

Most of these should be tried once, at least.

I can personally vouch for these...  you may want to just make a bunch of donut holes.  these are thick and dense.  and good.

These use mashed potatoes.  Surprisingly, there are a lot of recipes using these.  If you try any of them, let me know.
